Bobby Hodge & Melissa Dunbar in London, UK.

Bobby Hodge

Age: 22

Hometown: Andover, MA

Major: Business with a concentration in Finance

Minor: Economics

Co-ops:

Fund Accounting Specialist @ JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Financial Management Program Co-op @ General Electric

Position Management Co-op @ Harvard Management Company

  1. Joining SAA was one of the greatest decisions that I’ve made in my five years at Northeastern. I’ve made some of my best friends in SAA that I’m sure I will keep in touch with after graduation. SAA has provided me with some amazing networking opportunities and I’ve developed a lot professionally through some of the programming that the group puts on (such as the 5U25s and the John Hancock workshops). Attending the CBA 5U25 my middler year actually led to me getting my second co-op at GE, as I learned about the FMP co-op and was able to speak with one of the panelists about the position afterwards. The five minutes of networking after the 5U25 paid off, as it came up in my interview a few weeks later.

  1. Other than any future financial contributions that I’m sure I’ll donate, I’ll hope to be able to attend as many alumni events as possible. This way I will be able to give back to future students, as the current alumni have given back to me.

  1. Favorite SAA event(s) of the past year: Karaoke, Buddy Scavenger Hunt, Ski Trip

  1. Best memory at Northeastern: I’ll never forget the time that I met Melissa, which is one moment from my undergrad years that has had the largest impact on my life. I’ll also never forget the Championship celebrations with the Bruins in 2011 and the Red Sox in 2013. Something that will also stick with me forever is how the community came together after the Marathon Bombings last year.

  1. When I was five, I wanted to be on the Boston Bruins when I grew up

  1. If I had a jet to take me anywhere in the world, my first stop would probably be London. However, with that, I’d likely make some stops at other various locations in Europe, such as Rome, Barcelona, Paris, and Ireland among others. I’d also assume that, given the access to the jet, I somehow came into a large sum of money. With that, I’d be sure to extend my journey at least a few months and spend time in other locations across the globe, such as Dubai, Egypt, and Rio.

  1. Favorite Harry Potter character: It’s a tie between Harry, Ron, Hermione, Luna, Fred, George, Neville, Hagrid , Sirius, Professor McGonagall, Dumbledore, Snape, and Dobby

  1. I joined SAA in the fall of my middler year (2011). I spent my first year on the alumni relations committee with Jil. I spent the next two years on the finance committee with Maria (after an unsuccessful attempt at running for the Finance position going into my junior year). I attended district conference all three years that I was in the group.

Senior of the Week – Curt Hauschildt

Major: International Affairs & Political Science
Hometown: Dover, NH
Fun Fact: I used to own a hedgehog named Pandora
Favorite place in Boston: The waterfront right off of the financial district. Preferably with ice cream.
-What was your favorite part of being in SAA?
Easily, the people in it. SAA attracts the type of wonderful individuals who have become some of my closest friends (and roommates!) here at Northeastern and I’ve loved nothing more than planning amazing events and going on various retreats, ski trips, and conferences with them.

-If you could go back to freshman year, what is one thing you would do differently?

Cried less while trying to learn Arabic. Seriously, though, would have let past Curt know that it only gets a tiny bit easier.

-If you could be any Rebecca’s sandwich, what would it be and why?

The grilled hummus wrap because mmmmm….hummus.-What is the most embarrassing/funny thing that has happened to you during college?

Probably something that’s been blocked out from Snowball.

-If you could have any superpower what would it be and why?

Maybe teleportation. No more having to deal with the green line or arriving somewhere for food late at night just after they close. It’d be nice to easily visit all of my friends spread throughout the world.-What are your plans for after graduation?

Tradition NEVER graduates.

-Describe opportunities that Northeastern has given you that you otherwise would not have.

The opportunity to choose your own path, even if that means being off campus (and often out of the country) more than being here in Boston. From chatting with diplomats about peace treaties they’ve helped broker to accidentally crashing the celebratory boat party for Miss Serbia 2012, there have been some wonderful experiences Northeastern has helped me to find abroad.

-What is one thing every student should do before they graduate?

Be Paws. There’s something special about putting on that hot, somewhat sweaty suit and running around to high five and take pictures with everyone excited to see their favorite mascot.

-What does the Shillman Cat say?

Presumably, Meow.
– If you were in an intense rap battle with a celebrity, who would you want it to be, and what would be your finishing verse?
Definitely Bill Nye the Science Guy. “Do you have 11 protons? Because you are sodium fine.” Whoops, that might have gotten a bit too intense…

Huskies of the Week

This week, we are highlighting Ritu Bhargava and Paul Carey for all of their awesome contributions to SAA!  We can’t wait to get to know you two even more!  Here are some fun facts about them…

Ritu Bharagava

Hometown: Los Altos Hills, CA
Major/year: Criminal Justuce, sophomore
Favorite thing about Northeastern/Boston?
The public transportation and the pride of being from Boston!

What are you most looking forward to in SAA?
Ski weekend (I’ve heard a lot of good things) and getting to know everyone better.
Fun fact about you?
I have a FIFA addiction. It’s bad.
Favorite movies and/or books?
The Dark Knight Trilogy
How do you hope to stay connected to Northeastern when you graduate?
Through SAA of course.
What has been the highlight of your year here at Northeastern so far?
Probably joining SAA.  I’ve made a lot of new friends and I definitely would not have gone to all the Homecoming events I went to.
Of the Celtics, Bruins, and Patriots, which is your favorite team?
How could I decide between Tom Brady and Tukka Rask?
If you were randomly told you had the week off and $5000 to spend, what would you do?
Um I would probably invest $4000 and then take the $1000 and fly a couple of my friends back to my place in CA so I could show them around.
What would your dream co-op be?
I’m not really sure because the co-op I just got already sounds like a dream come true.
If you were leader of the free world and had the ability to create an international holiday, what would it be and why?
Uh that’s a tough one. Probably like a food holiday where food is super cheap that day so everyone can go out and eat and get a nice meal even if they’re poor? I’m not sure if that counts as a holiday……

Paul Carey

Hometown:  Mahopac, New York
Major/year:  3rd Year Junior, Biology Major
Favorite thing about Northeastern/Boston?
Fenway park, hands down
What are you most looking forward to in SAA?
SAA has already provided me with many opportunities to meet new people and added a lot more to this semester.  The experiences I have had in the two months of membership only make me wonder what the rest of my time will be like.

Fun fact(s) about you?
I ran into Matt Damon after Game 1 of the World Series, and I am related to a Pope.
Favorite movies and/or books?
Favorite Move is Inception, Favorite Book is Catcher in the Rye
How do you hope to stay connected to Northeastern when you graduate?
I hope to stay connected by having a constant interaction with both the people of the university and the campus itself.  My goal is to be employed by Northeastern University at one time or another.
What has been the highlight of your year here at Northeastern so far?
Highlight of the academic year was the Sox winning the World Series.

Of the Celtics, Bruins, and Patriots, which is your favorite team?  Bruins

If you were randomly told you had the week off and $5000 to spend, what would you do? Go straight to Eastern Europe or Asia and travel on a whim.

What would your dream co-op be? My dream coop hands down is to work at Sam Adams Brewery in their lab.

Welcome to the NU Age – Homecoming 2013 (Part 2)

Homecoming week continued with Meet the Court & Husky Decorating on Wednesday.  Meet the Court was obviously a great way to meet the candidates, but perhaps the best part were these adorable husky-themed Georgetown cupcakes!

photo photo-1 photo-2 IMG_3185 IMG_3186

We’re excited to find out who will rule the court after all!  Thursday brought out a ton of husky pride with the Red & Black Fair.  Free Boloco was served!  Which pretty much makes any occasion beyond awesome.  Paws paid a visit, there was face painting and ridiculous pictures.  What more could a college student want?

As the theme for Homecoming this year is ‘Welcome to the NU Age’ we chose to decorate our Husky with a highly modern and technological flair.  The husky was decorated to resemble a circuit, representative of how we are all connected, past, present, and future huskies.  We all need each other to function properly and reach our ultimate goal, just as an actual circuit needs all of its parts in order to light up an object, for example.  Sure do hope it wins so we can continue to reign over homecoming for having the most school spirit!

IMG_3829 IMG_3841 IMG_3839 IMG_3837 IMG_3836 IMG_3834 IMG_3833 IMG_3831

We can’t wait for the homecoming comedian TOMORROW! And hope to see you all there!

Shout-out to Aylin Orhan and Maria Caudle for all the awesome pictures of the events!

Homecoming 2013 – Welcome to the NU Age (Part 1)

Homecoming 2013 has started with a bang, as we enter “The NU Age.”  The week kicked off with a community service event, and trivia later that night.  VP of R&R, Adriana Jodoin, attended the event and had quite enjoyed it.  In commentary, she said, “trivia night was really fun because it was really fast-paced.  They only let us answer for about 30 seconds or less.  Tor some of the rounds, they would play a top 40 song and you would have to answer the song during that period.  That made it really fun!  And there were really cool prizes for the top 3 winners.  The first place prize was bean pot tickets, second place prize was a Northeastern sweatshirt blanket, and third place was NEU longsleeved shirts.  BHOP, soda, and candy were served, which was pretty awesome!  The fast pace of it made it highly entertaining.  It made the trivia highly challenging and rewarding.”

Tuesday brought our signature event, Mayor of Huntington Avenue.  The debate was rapid-fire.  Candidates truly showed their hilarious sides, and it will definitely be a tough pick for greek life and GDI’s alike.  Possibly one of the best highlights of the show was a visit from a past mayor, Gene Crepeau, who graduated NEU in 1962.  He reminded students and candidates that being MOHA is truly an honor.  Not only is it an opportunity to leave your mark, but it is a critical chance to connect everyone on campus, and make change, as the mayor represents the liaison between OAR and the student body.  Check out their campaign videos if you need an extra push in any direction.  Don’t forget to vote on myNEU this week!  Voting closes Thursday.

Mayor of Huntington Avenue – Meet the Candidates

Jeshiva

Max Jeshiva
D’Amore McKim School of Business, 2014

My name is Max Jeshiva, and I am a senior at Northeastern University majoring in business with a concentration in finance. Since my freshman year, I have been a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. I have completed three co-ops, with my most recent one being at MFS. I have been strongly involved on campus and am super excited for Homecoming this year. Go Huskies!

Goldman

Taylor Goldman
D’Amore McKim School of Business, 2014

My name is Taylor Goldman and I am a fifth-year senior from Chicago, Ill. If everything goes according to plan, I will be graduating this spring with a degree in Business Administration (Marketing and Management concentrations) as well as a minor in Psychology. To put it simply, I love Northeastern and I am a huge sports nut. Not only have I more than enjoyed my time on campus attending Northeastern hockey and hoops games, I’ve also been able to participate in co-ops with Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association and the National Football League. With my Mayor of Huntington Avenue campaign, I am trying to bring back the old-fashioned spirit of the contest that included ridiculous advertising and tons of school spirit. Hopefully I can do just that!

Basso

Rachel Basso
Bouvé College of Health Sciences, 2017
My name is Rachel Basso an I am currently a sophomore here at Northeastern University. I entered my freshmen year to pursue degree in Physical Therapy, but have switched to Communication Studies, a field of study more closely aligned with my passions and interests. I am an active volunteer in Peace Through Play, and now serve on the Executive Board as the Director of Events and Recruitment. I am a recent member of the Entrepreneurs Club and am currently competing in the Husky Start-Up Challenge. Having been a three-season high school athlete, I still love a good workout and devote much of my spare time to exercise.

Riggs

William Riggs
D’Amore McKim School of Business, 2016
Hey there, my name is Will Riggs. I’m a business major and Italian minor currently in my middler year. I love traveling, watching classic movies, and the occasional amateur taxidermy. In my time here at Northeastern, I have had the pleasure of getting to know an incredibly diverse student body and am proud to represent both Alpha Epsilon Pi and Northeastern Hillel in my candidacy for Mayor of Huntington Avenue. Go Huskies!

Rodrigues

Jose Rodrigues
College of Science, 2014

My name is Jose Rodrigues. I was born and raised in Stoughton, MA which is 20 minutes south of Boston (We have the IKEA). I’m a 5th year Biochemistry major and Human Services minor. I’m currently on co-op at a small biotech in Cambridge called H-3 Biomedicine. I’ll hopefully be in medical school in a couple of years and I’m interested in cancer research. I’m hoping to pursue a carrier in Osteopathic Medicine. It has been something I’ve been actively trying to promote at Northeastern. I helped to found Northeastern’s chapter of the Pre-Student Osteopathic Medical Association (Pre-SOMA). I’ve also been really involved with service at Northeastern such as, the Alternative Spring Break program and nuSERVES. I’ve been an RA for 4 years. Spring semester will be my 7th semester In Stetson East. I’ve also been an RA in International Village and in Davenport A& B.

I come from a very large, loud Portuguese family. They have taught me a lot, such as: how to eat pork properly, how to have a complete disregard for personal space, and how to be passionate and dedicated to anything you do. In my free time I run, read and pretend to play the guitar. I have a not so unusual obsession with Harry Potter. My favorite books at The Alchemist, Shadow of the Wind, Harry Potter (I already said that). I have the worst laugh known to man and it’s incredibly embarrassing. Northeastern has really given me so much in the past 5 years and I hope to celebrate that this year.

Brandano

Albert Brandano
D’Amore McKim School of Business, 2014

Born and raised 11 short stops away from Ruggles on the Orange Line, I have always had Boston in my blood. Fast-forward twenty-two years and with four years of my Northeastern education behind me, I have grown into a (if I do say so myself) well rounded, chivalrous, scholarly young man. I have lived in the dark side of Kennedy Hall, tried my hand at two seasons of Rugby, and embraced my competitive edge through a number of losing seasons of various intramural sports.

I am currently working through my 3rd co-op, helping to plan a student lead speaker conference in the spring, and training for a marathon in January. I enjoy spending my leisure time at Conor Larkins where you can probably catch me any Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday. When I am not being a “Larkin’s Lurker”, I am usually belting out one of my favorite 90’s tunes at OHE karaoke, or engaging in a marathon FIFA/NHL sesh. I hate the idea of graduating college, but I hate the idea of graduating college without being the Mayor of Huntington more. Vote for me.

Husky of the Week – Mayra Viviana Cerda Santiago

Hometown: Mexico City

Major/Year: Communications and Media/Screen Studies, 2017

Favorite thing about Northeastern/Boston?

About Northeastern, how many opportunities we have to do things that we like and about Boston, that it has a lot of awesome things to discover, the colors of fall and definitely sports.

What are you most looking forward to in SAA?

To get involve as much as I can; I’m not use to being in an association so I’m trying to make the best of it. Also, making friends!

What are some fun fact(s) about you?

I recently learned how to surf  (and surprisingly, I was good at it) so now I’ll do it in any chance that I get.

What are your favorite movies and/or books?

This is very difficult for me! As of right now, GoodFellas (but Forrest Gump and Big Fish are always in my list), and books would be The Great Gatsby (or Le Petit Prince).

How do you hope to stay connected to Northeastern when you graduate?

As an alum, I hope I can come back and talk to other students about my experience in Northeastern.

What has been the highlight of your year here at Northeastern so far?

My highlight is this husky of the week! I was very happy when I found out and it means that I have been active in the association and learning I can do a lot more than what I had imagined.

Of the Celtics, Bruins, and Patriots, which is your favorite team?

Bruins!

If you were randomly told you had the week off and $5000 to spend, what would you do?

I would go to Mexico to visit my friends and family, and if I had money left I would definitely go to the movies with all of them.

As you may already know, there is another Mayra in SAA. Do you think the two of you can co-exist, or are you of the Highlander mentality: “There can only be one.” ?

At the beginning I was very intrigued about this other Myra, but after meeting her I found out that there can be two awesome girls with the same name in SAA.

You’ve booked a dream vacation in your dream country of your dreams. However, due to a freak storm, all the planes have been grounded indefinitely. As you leave the terminal, you are confronted by a strange bearded man that claims he can get you to where you want to go. Because you are desperate and naive, you follow him outside. He presents you with the choice of three mythical beasts to take you to your destination. They are the Hippogriff of the Harry Potter Universe, the Griffin (a majestic beast with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion; the head and wings of an eagle; and an eagle’s talons as its front feet), or a giant flying-squirrel named Ricardo. Keep in mind that the flying-squirrel is a misnomer. As opposed to flying, you would actually be required to take off from a very high cliff or mountain and glide to your destination. Which do you choose, and why?

After thinking this very carefully I decided that I would choose the Hippogriff, because it seems like a fun and safe creature, and also because I’m a Harry Potter fan and would love to meet one.

Congratulations, Mayra!  We’re so happy to have you and can’t wait to see the impact you make!Mayra
